WCN History
The Center's background
Nursing leaders in Washington State have been working since the late '90's to address the need for nurses; specialized education and skills while supply was being predicted to be inadequate. The Nursing summit in 2001 resulted in a strategic Plan for Nursing to ensure that we have enough nurses to care for our citizens. A Center for Nursing to focus only on nursing issues was created in 2004, and progress is being made!

Funding:
WCN is a 501c3 charitable organization funded by nurses and a wide variety of stakeholders who are concerned about the nursing workforce issues in our state (individuals, a variety of public and private organizations, professional nursing organizations, businesses, foundations, and organized labor.)
Current Grants:
WA State Department of Health:
SB5599 authorized the Department of Heath to collect a $5.00 surcharge on each RN and LPN license. The majority of those funds come to WCN through a grant from DOH, for specific initiatives and projects. Use of this money is restricted to that work.
Microsoft Corporation:
Through TechSoup, WCN received a generous grant for hardware and software to complete our move to new office space.
The Norman Archibald Foundation:
WCN received a generous grant from the foundation for hardware and software to complete our move to new office space. This foundation supported our first technology purchase in 2005, making much of our work to date possible.
