Career Paths/Nursing Specialties

There are more than 100 specialties in nursing and a variety of work settings outside of hospitals. In fact, only about 50% of RNs in the U.S. work in hospitals. The other half work in settings such as ambulatory care, long-term care, home health, community health clinics, schools, the military, and research labs, just to name a few.

You can choose a specialty before, during or after nursing school, however, specialties often require additional training and education.
